    Have you ever wanted to be there for someone who’s struggling, but not known what to say? Or do you worry about saying the wrong thing?

    You’re not alone. Conversations about mental health can be hard. But you don’t need to be a mental health professional to support others in your community.

    Contact

    An elearning course, hosted on the SAMH website, will help you practice how to talk about mental health, and feel more prepared to help others.

    Aims and Objectives

    Practitioners will develop their understanding, confidence and skills in:

    • enhancing parents’ ability to think about and bond with their baby and tune into their feelings before and after the birth (reflective functioning), creating a strong base from which the baby can explore the world
    • developing and supporting secure parent-infant attachment relationships, leading to better outcomes for the child in terms of their cognitive development, the relationships they build and their resilience to cope if life gets tough.

    Audience

    • Experienced in working with families with young children
    • Qualified at level 3+ England, Wales & N Ireland  |  level 6+ Scotland  | level 5+ Republic of Ireland
    • Access to regular supervision supporting Peep Antenatal Programme delivery.  (Supervision should provide a safe and supportive opportunity for practitioners to: identify instances where referral to other services may be required, reflect on their practice and how they and parents(-to-be) feel about the sessions, talk through challenges, share good practice, critically assess and adjust how the programme’s core ideas are working.)
    • The Programme is not for expectant parents with complex problems, unless they have additional specialist support.

  • Peep Learning Together Programme Training

    Delivered by:

    Aims and Objectives:

    • engage and support parents to build on what they already do to enhance their baby’s or child’s early learning and development (contributing to school-readiness), through talking and playing as part of everyday life,  
    • explore practical ideas, strategies and resources, using the comprehensive and flexible Peep Learning Together Programme (followed up by extensive post-course delivery support),
    • deliver universal or targeted sessions with parents and children together, to meet local needs – in one-to-one, group or drop-in sessions; indoors, outdoors or virtually,
    • gain practitioner accreditation unit (optional, see below: 3 credits at level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, equivalent level 6 in Scotland).

    Learning objectives

    Peep Learning Together Programme Training is for practitioners who work with mums, dads, carers and babies or young children, to contribute to:

    • strong parent-child relationships
    • increased parental knowledge and confidence in how to support their child’s learning and play in day-to-day life
    • children’s personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, early literacy and maths, and health and physical development. 

    Audience: 

    The training is relevant whether you work in a children’s centre, community centre or family hub; in a school, nursery or early years setting; in a health centre, social care setting, library, prison, museum, stay and play or toddler group, or in the home – anywhere that involves working with families.

  • Highland Child Protection Committee Training

    Aims and Objectives:

    Child Protection Training is available free of charge to anyone who has contact with children in Highland. This includes those working with families and in adult services. Child Protection Training in Highland is developed and delivered in line with the National Learning and Development Framework for Child Protection.

    Level 1 courses are suitable for the general contact workforce. (People who have minimal contact with children, young people or family members)

    Level 2 courses are suitable for the specific contact workforce. (People with direct contact with children, young people or other family members including those working in adult services)

    Level 3 courses are suitable for the intensive contact workforce who may have specific responsibilities with regards to child protection. Includes Lead Professionals and those with core responsibilities for assessment and planning for children including those based within adult services.

  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health CPD Award

    Aims and Objectives:

    You will examine the concept of health and wellbeing in relation to mental health in children and adolescents and explore key policy documents like Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC). You will gain an awareness of child and adolescent mental health services and their differences across the UK and the importance of progress, participation and partnerships, as well as an overview of specific mental health disorders. Other areas explored are stigma and labelling; risk factors for mental health issues for children themselves, within families and within environments; and resilience, in particular the promotion of resilience in the school years.

  • First Aid for Youth Mental Health Training (Face to Face or Online & Self Study)

    Aims and Objectives

    We will cover depression, self harm. eating disorders, and bullying and will provide the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions. start a supportive conversation, and provide guidance on signposting to professional help. Learners will learn how to recognise and manage stress. Learners will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health and be able to put the plan in place.

    Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be done by healthcare professionals. but will be able to identify when a young person may have a suspected mental health condition, offer reassurance and support, and know sources of help. On successful completion of the course, participants can gain this accredited award at scqf level 5.. Participants must be aged 14 years or over.

    Tea/coffee/juice & biscuits are provided free of charge. Participants can bring a packed lunch or get something nearby. Please advise the trainer of any specific dietary requirements.

  • Child Poverty Learning Hub

    Aims and Objectives:

    The hub is aimed at staff in public services that come into contact with families and children and anyone working to improve outcomes for children and families.

    This includes staff in NHS boards and health and social care partnerships, local authorities, the wider public sector and parts of the third sector that work with families and communities.

    Learning objectives

    • Provide an overview of child poverty in Scotland
    • Raise awareness of the drivers of child poverty and the population groups at higher risk
    • Describe the impact of child poverty
    • Outline key actions to address child poverty

    Audience: 

    The hub is pitched at the foundation level and assumes that users will have little or no knowledge about child poverty.

  • Mental health : 32 decider skills

    Delivered by:  

    NHS Highland

    Aims and Objectives:

    The aim of this course is for all participants to be able to facilitate Decider Skills groups as well as teach decider skills to patients on an individual basis.

    The Decider Skills use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to teach children, young people and adults the skills to recognise their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, enabling them to monitor and manage their own emotions and mental health. Complex psychological theory has been distilled into highly effective, evidence based skills for individuals and organisations.

    Learning outcomes:
    By the end of this course, you should be able to:

    • Understand and explain the development and theoretical framework underpinning the decider skills
    • Gain knowledge and understanding of all 32 Decider Skills and how these can be taught in both an individual and group setting
    • Consider how the Decider Skills can be implemented into your own practice and workplace setting
    • Know how to access the Highland Decider Practitioner Support Group.

    Audience: 

    All staff (NHS Highland Only) who are supporting individuals to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing.

  • Promoting Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Preventing Self-harm and Suicide Module (Informed Level)

    Aims and Objectives:

    This e-learning module comprises of three children and young people animations and check your learning quizzes. In particular, they will help workers;

    • understand the factors that influence mental health and resilience in children and young people;
    • engage proactively with children and young people about mental health, self-harm and suicide;
    • recognise when to seek help to support those in their care

    Duration: 

    The module should take you around 30 minutes to complete.

    Audience: 

    ‘Informed Level’ is designed to support the knowledge and skills of those in health, social care and the wider public sectors who need to be informed about mental health, self harm and suicide prevention in relation to children and young people.

    This level is also applicable more broadly, and can have relevance to everyone, in any workplace, workforce or community who has the opportunity and ability to positively impact on their own and others’ mental health and wellbeing and contribute to supporting people experiencing mental ill health and preventing self-harm or suicide.

  • Understanding Depression and Low Mood in Young People

    Understand how to recognise depression and low mood in teenagers and learn how to help. This course is accredited for CPD. 

    Duration: 

    5 weeks of 3hrs weekly study 

    Audience: 

    The course has been specifically created for parents of young people with depression and low mood, teachers and primary (or other) healthcare professionals who play a role in detecting mental health difficulties and offering appropriate support and guidance to young people.
