    Have you ever wanted to be there for someone who’s struggling, but not known what to say? Or do you worry about saying the wrong thing?

    You’re not alone. Conversations about mental health can be hard. But you don’t need to be a mental health professional to support others in your community.

    An elearning course, hosted on the SAMH website, will help you practice how to talk about mental health, and feel more prepared to help others.

  • Smoking: Improving Mental and Physical health Achieving Cessation Targets (IMPACT) Training

    Aims and Objectives:

    Learning aims:
    The aim of this course is to equip workers who support people with experience of mental health problems with the knowledge, skills and confidence to initiate a conversation on smoking, and to discuss options for supporting people who are ready to quit.

    Learning outcomes:
    By the end of this course, you should be able to:

    • Explain the links between smoking and mental health, and the effect that smoking has on specific mental health medications
    • Initiate discussions on smoking, including the practical application of tools and techniques
    • Outline the importance and relevance of your role in discussing smoking with people who have lived experience of mental health illness, as well as your role in providing ongoing support
    • Provide an overview of local stop-smoking support options, including behavioural support, nicotine and non-nicotine containing products (which can assist in a quit attempt).

    Duration: 

    2 hours (1hr version available upon request)

    Audience: 

    This training is aimed at any individual staff or volunteer of public services or third sector/community groups that work with individuals to provide a service and additional support [Informed level]. This course is open to all sectors within the NHS Highland Board area.

    Offers a variety of courses each semester around mental health, wellbeing, substance use and recovery.

    Discovery College is the Highland’s first college dedicated to helping individuals gain a deeper understanding of wellbeing, mental health, and/or substance use.   • Mental health : 32 decider skills

    Delivered by:  

    NHS Highland

    Aims and Objectives:

    The aim of this course is for all participants to be able to facilitate Decider Skills groups as well as teach decider skills to patients on an individual basis.

    The Decider Skills use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to teach children, young people and adults the skills to recognise their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, enabling them to monitor and manage their own emotions and mental health. Complex psychological theory has been distilled into highly effective, evidence based skills for individuals and organisations.

    Learning outcomes:
    By the end of this course, you should be able to:

    • Understand and explain the development and theoretical framework underpinning the decider skills
    • Gain knowledge and understanding of all 32 Decider Skills and how these can be taught in both an individual and group setting
    • Consider how the Decider Skills can be implemented into your own practice and workplace setting
    • Know how to access the Highland Decider Practitioner Support Group.

    Audience: 

    All staff (NHS Highland Only) who are supporting individuals to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

    • A lot of people struggle with low mood over the winter months. Some people struggle so severely they have what is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
    • In this webinar, Dr Dimitri Gavriloff and Professor Colin Espie will help you understand the science behind SAD, looking at how SAD can affect our sleep routines and how you can manage your sleep during these times.

  • Understanding Anxiety, Depression and CBT 

    Delivered by:  

    Future Learn

    Aims and Objectives:  

    Improve your understanding of depression and anxiety and find out more about an effective and evidence-based treatment: CBT. This course is accredited for CPD.

    Duration: 

    5 weeks of 3hrs weekly study

    Audience: 

    This beginner’s course is aimed at anyone with an interest in mental illness generally, and anxiety and depression in particular. This may include: 

    • those who are currently experiencing or have previously experienced emotional difficulties, 

    • family and friends of those who are experiencing emotional difficulties, 

    • primary (or other) healthcare professionals who have a frontline role in detecting mental health difficulties and offering appropriate support and guidance to those affected.

    Online E-learning modules – self-guided and learn at your own pace.

  • Mental Health: Supporting Others

    Delivered by:  

    Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH)

    Aims and Objectives:  

    • The definition of mental health and wellbeing
    • What is stigma and discrimination & how does this affect mental health 
    • Common mental health problems, more specifically depression and anxiety, with short case study and signposting for further reading 
    • Early warning signs and triggers, and how we might spot the signs of poor mental health 
    • Preparing to have the conversation around mental health- how, why, where? Followed by ‘useful phrases and tips’ 
    • Group skills practice scenarios with prompting questions- office/work-based scenarios. 
    • Our limitations as caregivers and the value of signposting. 
    • All participants will be given a starter toolkit for signposting others for support, and encouraged to continue research for their own toolkit in their own time 

    Duration:  

    2 hours

    Audience: 

    This course is specifically designed for those who wish to upskill the ability to have the conversation and support others (friends, family members, colleagues, etc.) with mental health problems.
